Learning Activity

As part of your Final Project, you will have to conceptualize and operationalize two variables (one independent and one dependent). Once this is completed, you are in a position to create a hypothesis regarding their expected relationship.

To prepare, complete the following for this week's Milestone Learning Activity:

Identify one independent variable from your problem statement in Unit 1 (this is the cause).

How is the independent variable you've identified going to be represented? What is one indicator that could be used to represent this variable?

Identify one dependent variable from your problem statement in Unit 1 (this is the outcome or effect).

How is the dependent variable you've identified going to be represented? What is one indicator that could be used to represent this variable?

Write a hypothesis statement that shows how the independent and dependent variables you have specified are related. Use the following hypothesis structure:
_(subjects)_ that _(independent variable)_ are more/less likely to _(dependent variable)_ than _(subjects)_ that do not _(independent variable)_

Note: you may need to change the words "that" and "that do not" based on what variables you used in order for the hypothesis statement to make sense.

General Topic: Electronic monitoring

Problem: Electronic control has been trending issues in the world especially for states that have advanced in technology as the United States. The issue brought on board is that victims have raised some complaints on the system that intrudes into their private life while the United States governments stick to their strict measures of safety and security.

The study, therefore, seeks to understand the impacts of electronic monitoring to the victims and later draw conclusions and recommendations about electronic monitoring legalization.

Professor response:

Electronic monitoring is a good topic.

Good job but remember that students are proposing to evaluate a specific, cause and effect relationship between 2 variables (1 problem and 1 solution).

As such, we are not trying to understand impacts, draw conclusions, or make recommendations. Therefore, begin focusing on just determining a specific problem to evaluate.

You mentioned complaints about privacy. This is a good problem to evaluate.

We will continue to narrow down your problem and determine a solution for it in units 2 and 3.
