Essay: Problem and Solution
The Assignment: You are to identify a social problem/inequity in Hillbilly Elegy and suggest a feasible, logical solution when possible. I suggest you focus on an issue that you feel strongly about and argue your stance. In choosing your topic, be sure there are at least two logical sides and a clear "problem." You may even have to explain and define the problem, so the reader understands and agrees with you that you are, in fact, dealing with a problematic situation.
First, you will define and identify the problem in our main text, providing a clear background and importance of this matter. Then, you will offer your solution and defend it using credible, published sources. Once you have stated where you stand on the issue, you will proceed to support your view. The various rhetorical strategies (specific examples, evidence from authorities, anecdotes, description, comparison and contrast, testimonials, definitions) will help you to support your position.
The Criteria:
1. An introduction that grabs the reader's attention and introduces the topic to be examined
2. A thesis statement provided early in the essay (paragraph one or two)
3. An explanation of the issue:
a. Define the problem (published sources will help here)
b. If necessary provide a brief history or scope of the problem
c. Define any questionable terms
d. Present/introduce competing sides-some may believe that your "problem" doesn't really exist
4. A presentation of a viable solution
a. Provide logical reasoning for your stance
b. Compare / Contrast, Advantages and Disadvantages, Call on Authority, Testimonials, Anecdotes and Analogies
5. An explanation of the opposition's point of view or the obstacles you will face in attempting to solve the problem. How will you respond to these obstacles?
a. Consider the opposition's point of view and refute or address their concerns
b. This is your "real" audience so do not disregard their position
6. Conclude your essay with a reaffirmation of your stance and a recognition of the opposition
