Dr. Scott Layne of UCLA's School of Public Health has led national efforts to develop high-throughput laboratory capability for infectious diseases. Such a laboratory could play a critical role in preventing, deterring, and responding to acts of bioterrorism. High-throughput, automated laboratories will be capable of performing 10,000 to 100,000 or more tests per day. Compared to manual laboratories, they should offer 100 to 1,000-fold improvement in sample processing speeds and volumes. What professional disciplines might be involved in developing and establishing a high-throughput laboratory?
