1. As students, you should have a good understanding of operations within an academic institution. Nevertheless, you can always conduct some research to further enhance your knowledge of a school's system. (a) Select a private school as a case and analyze how it can implement lean practices. Also, (b) explain how the school could sustain a lean culture. Due to restrictions related to time and access to information, place an emphasis on general operations that are common in universities.
2. Select and respond to only one of the following questions (you have two options):
Option 1 (Service Blueprint): Go to a restaurant and create a customer flow map, identifying any customer flow or associated problems. Create a service blueprint for the same restaurant and critique the restaurant, based on the flow map and service blueprint. Describe all of the moments of truth you encountered, and how they were handled by the servers.
Option 2 (Queuing System): Spend some time studying a queuing situation at a large retail store (e.g., Walmart, Target, Safeway, Fred Meyer, Whole Foods, and Costco) on a busy day. What are some queuing activities you notice? How are customers impacted by the psychology of waiting? Does the store have any strategies in place to gain a bit from people waiting in lines?
