Today we have seen the transition from the paper-based health record to the Electronic Health Record (EHR). It is critical to understand how paper-based records are created and what information is needed to be able to create effective and meaningful EHR systems. When designing electronic data collection screens, it is common to begin by creating the screen(s) on paper first.
This historic transition to EHR systems has brought many new career opportunities for Health Information Management (HIM) professionals. Understanding the various elements that build the foundation for the EHR is key knowledge as we move towards electronic health information systems in hospital, physician practices, and other healthcare facilities.
Using your course reading assignments and research on these topics to complete this assignment.
Include the following.
Part 1: Discuss the roles of HIM professionals in electronic health information systems
Identify 3 roles available to HIM professionals in electronic health information systems. List the roles and provide a brief description of each. Which of the 3 roles identified above do you feel would be most valuable within the healthcare community? Explain your reasoning.
Part 2: Examine the elements and design of an EHR
Define these EHR elements: data, character, field, record, file, and information. These elements are all critical components of an electronic data collection screen. Make a list of critical elements needed to register a patient that should be included on an admission face sheet (electronic data collection screen). Create a list of data fields from the critical elements you listed from Step 2 in the order they should be collected to document patient information. Keep in mind the logical flow of information that will be needed when entering patient data; your fields should flow logically as data is collected from the patient. For ideas, review example admission face sheets that you have viewed during this course.
