Assessment outline

This report is based on an organisation from a tourism sub-sector of your choice (e.g. accommodation providers, airlines, visitor attractions, travel agents, tour operators, cruise companies, etc.). During this task you need to ensure that your entire argument focuses on your chosen organisation and that it provides a RELEVANT and CRITICAL analysis of the sector it belongs to. You may focus your answer on a country of your choice.

You are required to introduce the sub-sector and then introduce your organisation, before undertaking an analysis of your chosen organisation. You are to identify and critically analyse mega trends, (changing) demand, operational and managementchallenges and opportunities the organisation is facing.

You are then to use this analysis and discuss how the tourism organisation of your choice can address these mega trends, (changing) demands, operational/managementchallenges and opportunities that are presented to it in an ever dynamic business environment. You will finish your report with recommendations that will ensure long-term sustainability of the organisation in its sector.

There are two parts to the coursework. The first part is a project/report plan that will be handed in on Moodle in week 7 of Term 1:

The plan needs to link to your report topic. This will allow you to communicate ideas, thoughts and information and integrate the mega trends, demands, operational/management challenges and opportunities of your chosen sector with academic concepts.

You will need to demonstrate that you have gained enhanced knowledge of the report topic and started to research the information. Therefore you will need to state your aim and some objectives, what trends, demand changes, operational/management challenges and opportunities you have read about and how they link to academic literature, frameworks and theories.

Your project plan can take the form of a mind map or logical bullet points of ideas. It should be no longer than 1 A4 page or 200 words.

We strongly suggest that you try to submit all coursework by the deadline set as meeting deadlines will be expected in employment. However, in our regulations, UEL has permitted students to be able to submit their coursework up to 24 hours after the deadline. The deadline is published in this module guide. Coursework which is submitted late, but within 24 hours of the deadline, will be assessed but subjected to a fixed penalty of 5% of the total marks available (as opposed to marks obtained). If you submit twice, once before the deadline and once during the 24 hour late period, then the second submission will be marked and 5% deducted. This rule only applies to coursework. It does not apply to examinations, presentations, performances, practical assessments or viva voce examinations. If you miss these for a genuine reason, then you will need to apply for extenuating circumstances, or accept that you will receive a zero mark.
