Explore the interaction(s) among the various components of a pathophysiological condition and how the body (through the adaptive and innate immune systems) and modern medicine are able to combat the condition. The focus of the Grand Round Project is to focus on one specific disease and determine its clinical symptoms, the changes in cellular metabolism, alterations in tissues, and organs (organ systems) that accompany the pathophysiological condition. The final section of the project will examine the commonly accepted treatments and the potential outcomes of the disease. Furthermore, a secondary objective of the project is to facilitate the development of the use of primary and secondary research to better understand the current status of our understanding of the disease process in regard to a specific disease or condition.

Research Paper

Follow the Guidelines and Grading Rubrics found in the sections above.

See the Syllabus section "Due Dates for Assignments & Exams" for due date information.

Best Practices

The following are the best practices in preparing the paper for this Grand Rounds Research Project.

• Cover Page: Include who you prepared the paper for, who prepared it, the course it was prepared for, the name of the disorder or disease (medical and common language), and the date.

• Introduction: Use a header on this section of the paper. This will indicate you are introducing your paper.
The purposes of an introduction or opening are to

• introduce the subject and why the subject is important;

• preview the main ideas and the order in which they will be covered; and

• establish a tone of the document.

Include in the introduction a reason for the audience to read the paper. Also include an overview of what you are going to cover in your paper and the importance of the material. (This should include or introduce the questions you are asked to answer on each assignment.)

• Body of Your Report: Use a header titled with the name of your project (e.g., Friedreich's Ataxia-Its Origins, Treatments, and Outcome). Then proceed to break out the main ideas. State the main ideas, state major points in each idea, and provide evidence. Break out each main idea you will use in the body of your paper. Show some type of division, such as separate sections that are labeled, separate group of paragraphs, or headers. You would include the information you found during your research and investigation.

• Summary and Conclusion: Summarizing is similar to paraphrasing but presents the gist of the material in fewer words than the original. An effective summary identifies the main ideas and major support points from the body of your report. Minor details are left out.

• Works Cited: Use APA format as specified in the Syllabus.

Additional hints on preparing the best possible project follow.

1. Apply a three-step process of writing: plan, write, and complete.

2. Prepare an outline of your research paper before you go forward.

3. Complete a first draft and then go back to edit, evaluate, and make any changes required.

4. Use visual communication to further clarify and support the written part of your report. You could use example graphs, diagrams, photographs, flowcharts, maps, drawings, animation, video clips, pictograms, tables, and Gantt charts.
