ESSAY QUESTIONS:
Write about 400 words (somewhat more than a typed page would be). Note that if a question has multiple parts, be sure to spend a substantial amount of time on each.
[1] Write an essay in which you describe and explain in detail Alex deWaal's overall thesis and line of thought in his book, Mass Starvation, and the arguments he puts forward to make his case. This should include his views on what the causes of famine are, as well as on what needs to be done in order put an end to them, and why.
[2] Alex de Waal describes the ideas of Thomas Malthus (1766-1834) as getting in the way of a proper understanding of the causes of famines and the proper actions to take in order to avoid them. (Sen and Keneally agree with this position.) Explain what is wrong with Malthus' ideas here and how belief in them leads or has led to bad outcomes. Then consider and respond to the most significant objection you can think of to your line of thought
[3] The Green Revolution: Write an essay on the "Green Revolution".
Define or describe what the Green Revolution is, and what impacts it had. Give a detailed accounting of the considerations for and against the thesis that the Green Revolution was a positive endeavor and should be expanded so as to contribute to our dealing with the world food problem.
Note that the objective of the essay is to show that you see both sides of the issue and can give good arguments for each of them. It is NOT part of the assignment to determine which side is right and argue specifically for that side.
