Length: 1000-1200 words (give word count at end of essay)
Due: Upload to Canvas on 10/13 by 11:30 AM (It is your responsibility to submit a Word file that can be opened by me. If I cannot open a file, or if you submit the wrong file, you will be assessed a penalty).
Author's Note: (approx. 50 to 100 words): Recognize recurrent problems I have identified in your first two writing exercises.
Guidelines:
You need to have a clearly defined thesis, which contains an argument or claim developed in response to the selected topic. Use clearly identified evidence (from the textbook) to support your argument.
Choose one of the following topics and write an essay in response to it. You need not respond to all the issues or questions raised within a topic; depth is more important than breadth of coverage. Your works cited page or bibliography must follow the MLA or APA styles. Number your pages and indicate word count at the end of the essay but before the bibliography.
Write an essay critically examining the pros and cons of globalization. Your essay must take into account no more than two of the following ideas: ethical and human concerns of globalization (Sen); the question of inequity, the axial division of labor/unequal exchange (Wallerstein); globalization=Westernization, globalization=liberty (Micklethwait and Wooldridge); globalization=neoliberalism (Harvey); the antithetical relationship between jihad (nationalism, not necessarily religious) and globalization (Barber); mediascapes, ethnoscapes, technoscapes, financescapes and indigenization (Appadurai); cultural synchronization (Tomlinson).
Your essay must strike a balance between the two positions and explain why you selected these concepts to support your position.
Illustrate your claim using one example from your personal life (see my Oriflame example) OR use an example from the real world (WE #1).
- You may use portions of WE #1 and WE #2, if and when relevant to your topic. If you choose to reuse those two pieces, be sure to integrate them carefully into essay #1.
- DO NOT summarize essays from the reader.
- Do not quote more than once in each paragraph. Quote ONLY to support a point and not to introduce a point. Keep your quotes short and avoid block quotes.
