The term describes social work practice that is not limited to only one method or point of view. Generalist social work practitioners stay informed of current research in their field, and they select methods that seem most appropriate to the different situations that their clients face.

For this Assignment, select one of the case studies provided in the Readings. Consider different ways of describing generalist practice and how you might identify it in social work.

• Create a definition of generalist practice using your own words.

• Identify at least three specific examples of generalist practices you see portrayed in your selected case study.

Imagine how terrible it would be to plan a party and no one showed up. As a social worker, you may very well plan a group and no one attends. Why might this happen? In part, it might be due to a lack of proper planning. Prior to establishing a group, there is a great deal of planning that needs to occur. First and foremost, you need to assess the need for the group.

• Why does this group need to be provided?

• Are there enough individuals who would want this type of group?

• Is there a clear identified gap in services at the agency that shows a need for this group?

• Have you chosen a time when many clients could attend this group?

• What are the criteria for being accepted into the group?

• Is there a possible incentive that could be offered for attending the group (bus or gas fare, food, etc)?

• Do you need babysitting services so that clients with children are free to attend the group?

• Is this a task group, an educational group, and or a psychosocial group?

• Is the group open-ended or time-limited?

As you can see, there are many details a social worker needs to address, prior to starting a group. Once these details are finalized, how will you run the group and what intervention skills might you use to meet the need you identified?

For this Assignment, review this week's Resources. Then, select a population with which you might like to build a group. Consider the needs of the population and the type of group you might build to benefit the population. Think about how you might structure this group and what role you, the social worker, might need to assume in order to support the group members. Finally, reflect on what intervention skills this group might require and the potential group dynamics of which you should be aware while running the group.

Assignment: (2- to 4-page paper in APA format).

Your paper should include:

• A description of the population with which you might like to build a group and an explanation of the type of group you might build with this population.

• An explanation of the concerns that might be addressed for this population in that group and a description of which cultural structures and values may oppress, marginalize, alienate, create, or enhance privilege and power for this group.

• A description of the details you must consider when planning the group. For example, composition of the group, recruitment strategies, format (open or closed), time frame, and use of screening interviews for members.

• An explanation of the intervention skills needed for working with this group and an explanation of the potential professional roles the social worker might need to take on as the leader.

• An explanation of the potential dynamics to be aware of when running this particular group.

Now that you have completed your role play script, it is time to record your role play. Practicing your social work skills through role plays is an essential part of a social work education. Role plays assist you in identifying the areas where you are strong, as well as the areas where you might need improvement. They also allow you to develop the social work instincts necessary to effectively work with clients.
Role Play Video (3-5 minutes):

Your video role play, which should be based on the script you created in Week 5, should include:

• A demonstration of the interaction between you as the social worker and the client system you selected that reflects the appropriate step of the GIM and social work practice behaviors, based on the presenting concerns of that client system.

• A depiction of at least two techniques you selected for implementing the appropriate practice skills for working with your client system.
Upload your video using the Kaltura Media Uploader by Day 7 of Week 9. For instructions on how to upload your video, refer to the Kaltura Media Uploader area on the course navigation menu. Be sure to also upload a transcript of your video.

You should continue reflecting on your role play experience. Project: Client System Role Play Reflection and Analysis Paper

After planning the script and videotaping the role play, how did it feel to walk in the shoes of a social worker? What insights did you gain from the experience? What aspects of this experience were challenging for you? Being able to recognize the areas where you were successful and the areas where you need improvement are what make role plays an important part of your social work education.

Just as important is the opportunity to witness your colleagues demonstrating the same skills and techniques you are trying to master. This process allows you and your colleagues to learn from one another's mistakes and successes, under the guidance of an expert in the field-your Instructor.

For the written segment of your Final Project, reflect on your experience in developing this role play video. Consider any insights you gained from the experience, as well as the challenges you might have experienced in its planning and execution. Think about the specific techniques you used and why you used them. Finally, review the videos your colleagues posted. Select one of those videos and consider any areas in which your colleague might improve his or her approach and why.
Written Assignment: (5-6 page APA-formatted paper):

Your written assignment should include:

• A reflection on your experience in doing this role play video.

• An explanation of any insights you gained from the experience.

• An explanation of the challenges you experienced in planning and executing the role play.

• An explanation of the specific techniques you used and why you used them.

• A brief description of the colleague's role play video you selected.

• A critique of what your colleague did well in the video you selected and an explanation of areas in which your colleague might improve his or her approach and why.
