Actual discussion:
In this unit you learned about visual perception and saw that people often make perceptual errors. For example, you learned about perceptual errors such as change blindness and inattentional blindness as well as errors in face recognition.
For this Discussion, create a case study of a client who has likely experienced one of the perceptual errors you learned about in this unit. Then, discuss how you would explain this perceptual error to your client. Make sure you support your discussion with information from the unit's Readings.

Perception
Discussion: Perception
Hello Professor and class,
A man and woman who are regulars at a local restaurant go to eat on a Monday night. When they arrived back on Tuesday the woman had mentioned that they got a new jukebox. Her boyfriend stated that the jukebox had always been there. In this case the woman shows signs of change blindness. Although the jukebox had always been there she failed to recognize the object. Our text goes on to explain that this is a "smart mistake," and can occur due to overuse of top-down processing (Matlin, 2012). I would explain to her that this perceptual error is common in everyday life when we fail to recognize stimuli in our surroundings.

Hello, all!
Inattentional blindness happens when one is focusing on a particular task or object, and does not notice a visible, unexpected object. (Matlin, 2012) Researchers believe that inattentional blindness occurs when a task is unusually demanding (Matlin, 2012.) It is believed that this or change blindness can occur when people overuse top- down processing. Change blindness is the failure to recognize a change in a scene or object. (Matlin, 2012) An example of inattentional blindness would be a man driving on the interstate. He is late for work, and is driving faster than usual. Because he is anxious about being late, he unintentionally begins to distract himself, changing radio stations and thinking about what to tell his boss. He rehearses what he believes to be several viable excuses, glancing at his eyes in the rearview mirror. He is tailgating other cars, and switching lanes frequently. Because he is subjecting himself to a task that he has complicated with additional stimuli, he fails to see a very large green industrial sewer pipe in the highway, displaced from a work truck, up ahead. Because of another driver, he changes lanes, and misses the pipe.
