ASSIGNMENT - Write an essay of approximately 2750 - 3000 words on any one (1) of the following topics:
Option 1: The absence of overt manifestations of industrial conflict does not necessarily indicate employee/employer harmony. Management has to be aware that industrial conflict can be exhibited covertly too, and that this can be even more destructive. Examine the causes, manifestations and consequences of overt and covert conflict in the workplace. Can conflict result in benefits for the 'combatants'?
Option 2: It has been said that the strengths of a negotiator are different from those of an advocate. They require equal but different skills - both of which are of use in the process of dispute resolution in Australian industrial relations. Discuss.
Option 3: While the academic disciplines of Employment Relations (ER) and Human Resource Management (HRM) are specialisations in their own right in the 'real world' of work they cannot be separated. Most, if not all, issues that could be said to fall under the umbrella of the study and professional practice of HRM (including, but not necessarily limited to, recruitment and selection, performance management, compensation determination, occupational health and safety, training and development, dismissal, promotion, etc.) could, if performed poorly, have negative ER implications. Indeed, it has been said that 'good HRM results in good ER; bad HRM results in bad ER. The disciplines of HRM and ER are forever linked'.
Option 4: Using your own organisation, or an organisation of your choice, examine one or more practices that are undertaken that you would regard as being in the realm of HR and discuss how these, if done poorly, could lead to the emergence of IR issues. Describe the HR practice/s as currently done, outlining your concerns, and make recommendations to your employer for improvement.
