A. Required Sections and Format For Abbreviated-Version Lab Reports
The requirements for all abbreviated-version lab reports are the same as those for full-version lab reports except that:
The "Purpose" section is not required.
The "What Was This Experiment Section" is not required.
The "What We Did Section" is not required.
The "Executive Summary" section is not required.
Thus:
After the separate cover page (which includes lab partner's name), include:
1. A one-line section providing the title of the experiment in bold-face type. For example Laboratory 4: Kinematics in One Dimension
Then:
2. The Data and Calculations section as in full-version lab reports subject to the same requirements.
3. The Analysis Section as in full-version lab reports subject to the same requirements. Includes graphs, plots data tables, etc. Again, for some experiments, this may be combined with the Data and Calculations section.
The report must be clearly understandable to the grader. Therefore, if you are answering a question from the lab manual, state the question (not just a question number) immediately before answering it.
Kinematics in One Dimension
Objective: To develop techniques for measuring velocity and acceleration and to determine the experimental uncertainties associated with these measurements. Apparatus: Precision air track, air cart, cardboard flags of different lengths, infrared photogates, computer timer and interface.
Questions
1. Choose one column of data from your time measurements and explicitly calculate the mean and the standard deviation. Show that the values you obtained are the same as the ones as given by the computer. Determine if the computer has calculated σn or σn-1. Indicate your finding in your notebook. Show your calculations.
2. The sensors in the photogates are approximately 0.2cm in diameter. Do you think that this has an effect on your data? If so, what do you think the effect might be?
