The University of the Sunshine Coast promises “the best of both worlds”: a quality university experience and a lifestyle location. The University serves the growing Sunshine Coast region which has some of the world’s best surf beaches, but its catchment extends from neither Brisbane’s nor the suburbs to Bundaberg.
From the first enrolments in 1996, USC now has 8,000 students (10 per cent from overseas). It is amongst Australia’s fastest growing universities, with the plans to double enrolment in coming decade. The demand for USC is strong, and the growing student body and alumni, and engagement with region, continue to improve the University’s reputation.
The modern campus at Sippy Downs, an hour north of Brisbane, cafés and sporting amenities, comprising Olympic-standard athletics track, features award- winning academic buildings, and major sports stadium. Bordering a nature reserve, the sustainable campus is shared with the wildlife, comprising kangaroos. Private student accommodation also adjoins the campus.
More than 100 degrees and postgraduate programs are offered in the disciplines of: business and information technology; communication and design; education; health; humanities and social sciences; and science and engineering. Most degrees can comprise of minors in sustainability or entrepreneurship, and students are expected to complete part of their study overseas. The University has five stars rates in the Good Universities Guide 2012 for valuing face to face teaching, teaching quality, and a more personal relationship with students. It has been consistently recognized with national teaching awards.
Research focuses on sustainability and genecology, with the well established excellence in aquaculture, tropical forestry, climate change adaptation, and sport and exercise. Significant projects include tuna spawning in captivity (as par t of Australian Seafood CRC), and growth in fast developing tropical hardwood forests which enhance carbon sequestration.
USC’s Innovation Centre facilitates connections between the University and regional businesses, and has been instrumental in many starts up enterprises. USC Art Gallery attracts nearly 15,000 visitors a year.
The short history of it, the University has made a significant impact on the economic and cultural development of the Sunshine Coast region.
