Charles Darwin University (CDU) As the largest tertiary institution in the Northern Territory, The University has campuses in Alice Springs, Darwin, Katherine and Nhulunbuy, Palmerston, and study centers in Jabiru, Yulara, and Tennant Creek. It also delivers education and training into over 170 remote centers across the Territory.
Over 21,000 students study with CDU online, on the campus or at the Territory’s remote locations. The student comes from all parts of the Australia and includes a substantial representation of Indigenous people. Its overseas students come from over 60 countries.
The University is growing its capacity through strategic partnerships, the most recent the Medical Program offered in conjunction with the Flinders University. This program permits the Northern Territory to grow its own doctors for the first time. By the partnership, medical students can complete their degrees without leaving the Territory. This university is also a member of Innovative Research Universities, collaboration between members, which promotes high-quality research, and provides a unique perspective in advancing the national education agenda.
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2011 placed CDU at 306 in the world’s top 400 universities. It also ranked CDU 13th in the rankings for Australian universities.
This is the Spain-based SCImago Institutions 2009 World Report published the first index of institutions that are active in research, and ranked CDU in the top five Australian universities.
The University’s newly structured research activity sees the establishment of a range of institutes and centres that encourage cross-discipline collaboration. Research takes place largely under the following groups:
• The Menzies School of Health Research
• The Northern Institute
• Research Institute for the Livelihoods and Environment
• The Research Centre for Wellbeing and Health
• The Centre of the Renewable Energy and Low Emission Technology
• Centre for Education Training and Hydrocarbon Research
• The Australian Centre for Excellent Knowledge and Education
