The threats cannot be eliminated; however, disaster management focuses on the plan for decreasing the effect of disasters. Theexplosions that occurred in Tianjin (China) were multiple explosions that took about 173livesand it also caused minor injuries to hundreds of people (Agnihotri, 2016). This happened ata container storage facilitywhich was located at the Tianjin Port. The explosions occurred onth Wednesday, 12 of August, 2015 (RFH, 2015). The first and second explosiontook placewithin 30 seconds at the facility(Bbc.com, 2016).The location was the Binhai NewArea of Tianjin, China. The subsequent explosion that occurred wasmore fatal because it ledto the detonation of approximately 800 tonnes of ammonium nitrate. The firefrom the firstexplosionsustained, burningand being out of control all over the weekend. Thiskept oncausing more explosions one after another, with 8 added explosions that took place onSaturday, 15 August (RFH, 2015).The reason was unknown in the beginning, but the after an investigation done inFebruary 2016, it wasinterpreted thatbecause of an overheated container of dry nitrocellulose, the first explosion occurred. The inadequatecoverage of the explosions and the emergencyreactionsreceived a lot of criticism. The government of Chinakept a check on the internet andsocial media. They also it took down various websites for publishing wrong informationregarding the explosion. As per the news reports, in total there were 173 deaths, 8th weremissing and around 797 people hadminor injuries as of 12 of September 2015(Bbc.com, 2016). According to Bbc.com (2016), 123 people were found responsible for theexplosion. Five people at ministerial level were also found responsible. According to thereports, the owner of Ruihai International Logistics built an illegal freight-yard of toxicmaterials. The operations run under the warehouse were illegal, toxic materials were stored DISASTER MANAGEMENTillegally. Also, the warehouse had an inappropriate safety management. Therefore, the aim ofthis essay is to critically analyse the crisis in relation with paramedic practice.Leadership ChallengesThere were various key leadership challenges that were observed during the crisis.Thechallenges can be analysed using Trait theory, Situational Theory, Functional theoryandTransactional theory that are being discussed hereunder.Trait TheoryLeadership trait is the concept that saysthat people have in-born talent with certaincharacter drivenqualities. It’sthe possession of thesenatural qualities and characteristics that isthesign of a strong leader.A few traits possessed by leaders are flexibility, charisma, honestyand integrity, using good judgment and decisions, tenacity and various others. It is arguedthat the crisis was caused due to the above traits not being followed by the leaders. It wasreported that the organization had worked for months without license and it involved thechemicals in explosion. Poor judgment of decisions was made and illegal business wasconducted (Walter & Scheibe, 2013). Clearly, the leader does not possess honesty, integrityand sound decision making traits. It was found that at the storage, the manager was keepingmore than 11,000 tons of hazardous chemicals at the warehouse when the explosion tookplace (Bbc.com, 2016). Such an amount included 800 tons of ammonium nitrate and 200 tonsof nitrocellulose which violates the regulations (Bbc.com, 2016). Therefore, it is inferred thatthe management and leader of the warehouse, RuiHai lacks appropriate decision makingpower. He is not honest; therefore he sets a poor example in front of his employees. Thefollowers shall walk into the same track. DISASTER MANAGEMENTSituational leadership Situational leadership refers to when the leader must adjust his way of working to fitin the situation to the development level of the followers he is trying to influence. There arevarious situations where there is an emergency that shows how adaptable the leader is.According to Hersey and Blanchard, there are different levels defining leadership styles-telling, selling, participating and delegating. As the operations are illegal, it is evident that thewarehouse manager had one-way communication pattern and theemployees may be unable totake responsibility. The participation may also be lacking among the followers and theywould not be taking the responsibility due to lack of willingness or confidence. It was foundthat the chemical nitrocellulose was kept too close to highly explosive chemical, ammoniumnitrate which is commonly used in fertilizers. Additionally, it was assessed that the fire wasout of control and hence it repeatedly caused secondary explosions. It is inferred that themanagement is poor at situational leadership or contingency leadership. Eight additionalexplosions were caused and thousands of cars were damaged. Therefore, with impropermanagement and leadership, the contingency and further damage could not been prevented. The damage could have been less if the manager or leader would have proper riskmanagement plan (Massey-Abernathy & Byrd-Craven, 2016). Functional TheoryAccording to Hackman and Walton, functional theory is for acknowledgingspecific leadership behaviours that is expected to play a role in order to add organizational orunit effectiveness. The leader’s primaryrole is to check whether the necessity of the group istaken care of. It is not possible for the leader to perform job by a single person.Their job isdone only when they have actively contributed to the group’s efficiency and effectiveness.Thistheory focus mainly on showing the way and leading people that how the task should be "
