  • "Analysing and interpreting qualitative data Dr Nataliya Shiraz 2016/17 1Deciding on your approach to analysis Using a deductive approach: the use of existing theory/ theoretical propositions a means to devise a framework to help you to organize and direct your data analysis Using a inductive approach (also called ‘ gr ou nded approach): you collect data ? you assess which themes are emerging ? you develop a conceptual framework to guide your subsequent work Dr Nataliya Shiraz 2016/17 2Qualitative data analysis:Coding/Categorising data ? You need to re-arrange your original data into analytical categories. ? Your identification of categories will be guided by the purpose of your research as expressed through your research question/objectives. concept-driven categories (derived from existing theory; developed in advance) data-driven categories (derived from data) ? Keep up-to-date definition of each categories ? Some categories may attract large numbers of units of data and become too broad for further analysis without being subdivided Dr Nataliya Shiraz 2016/17 3Qualitative data analysis:Coding/Categorising data ? The key step in transforming raw texts into representations thatcan be analyzed ? Involves reducing and quantifying the data into discretecategories (e.g. themes, sentiments) ? Aim of the coding scheme:maximize precision, accuracy, reliability Axial coding is the disaggregation of core themes during qualitative data analysis. Axial coding in Grounded Theory is theprocess of relating codes (categories andconcepts) to each other, via a combination of inductive anddeductive thinking. Dr Nataliya Shiraz 2016/17 4Steps in Coding Thematic analysis: “a form of pattern recognitionthrough the data” (Fereday & Muir-Cochrane, 2006) Steps in coding: ? Transcribe the data ? Read through your set of transcripts ? Do it again? Generate initial codes ? Search for themes ? Review your codes/themes (merge codes describing the same phenomenon;any relation to concepts in existing literature? Possible connections betweenthe codes? ? Consider more general theoretical ideas in relation to codes and data (e.g.consider in more detail how codes may relate to existing literature) Dr Nataliya Shiraz 2016/17 5Do you see the rising inequality in our society as aproblem? If so, can we rely on the generosity of thesuper-rich, or should other actions be taken to helpclose that gap? If the latter, what would your solutionbe? Dr Nataliya Shiraz 2016/17 6From my very first day as an entrepreneur, I've felt the only mission worthpursuing in business is to make people's lives better. An important priorityfor me is a business must get their own house in order. Be or become anagent of positive change in your own enterprise and adopt responsiblepractices to eliminate the risks that often lie at the root of inequality andpoverty. That's why I started Student Magazine at the height of the VietnamWar, to give a voice to my generation who were against the war. It's also whywe've been disrupting the airline business for more than 30 years, and whywe continue to bring change to many other industries, from mobilecommunications to hotels and, soon, space travel. We must also continue topush ourselves forward to improve lives for people across the planet and Ibelieve business can be a driving force for social, environmental andeconomic benefit. We need to find real world solutions which benefit everyone. I've been verypassionate about renewable energy for many years, particularly solar energyand its capacity to bring abundant clean, sustainable energy to millionsaround the globe.
