This isespecially true for elderly people. However the rapid development has led to an increasing incidence ofelderly abuse in the world. The increasing attention that has been devoted to the issue can be attributed to the increasing proportionof the elderly in most developed parts of the world. In fact, in the economically developed societies, theissue gained realization much earlier than it evoked concerns in India or any other developing country forthat matter. For instance, in the Western parts of the world, including the United States, Canada, Britainand France, an increased attention has been given to issues of abuse and neglect of the elderly since the1 1970s and 80s .One of the most common explanations for this mismatch over concern for the elderly between developedand developing parts of the world is that the latter have been endowed with a relatively young populationthat has been responsible for propelling growth in these regions. However, as a result of demographicchanges, most developing societies too have growing numbers of the elderly constituting their population. This has therefore required concern over the pressing issue of elderly abuse and neglect in the developingsegments of the world as well. In India many cases of physical, psychological, sexual and financial abuse of the elderly are evidentlyrising with increasing modernization and small-family norms. This poignant issue demands immediateconcern. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess the nature and extent of elderly abuse in terms of their needsand desires towards emotional, economic, care giving, social and cultural issues. This study will focus onurban and rural areas of Delhi and will try to find out the prevalence and the causes for the same in thescenario of growing need for care, safety and security of the older person. Also, the study will enquireabout any crime against the elderly.1 http://malakapurshankardass.com/articales/Elder_Abuse_and_Neglect_in_India_2_for_Rajan.pdf; last accessedon Nov 14, 2013 at 15:18 hours.
