"Fahrenheit 451Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 relies on symbolism to represent the abstract ideasor concepts. In the novel, blood appears throughout and was an embodiment of the repressedsoul of the humans. Montag had often felt that the most revolutionary thoughts of his werecirculating in his blood. The symbol of blood is intricately related to the Snake machine. Mildredwho has lost her primal self remains unaltered when her poisoned blood is replaced with freshblood which is mechanically administered through the Electric eyed Snake machine.Other symbols were the hearth and the salamander. The author made use of these imagesin conjunction. The hearth or the fireplace is the conventional symbol of home. The salamanderis the official embodiment of firemen. Both of these images are intertwined with the dominantimage of the fire. The hearth contains the fire which heats the home while the salamander, as theancient faith suggests, dwells in fire and is unharmed by the flames.The second part of the novel has the symbol of the sieve and the sand. It is also the titleof the second part of the novel and is taken from the childhood memory of Montag who tried tofill a sieve with the sand on the beach to get a dime from the cousin and weeping over the futileattempt. He compares this memory in his attempt to read the entire Bible as fast as possible inthe subway and hopes that if he reads quickly then some of the materials will stay in his memory.In other words, sand stands for tangible truth which Montag tries to seek while the sieve is thehuman mind which seeks the elusive truth which seems impossible to attain in any permanentmanner. Hence the use of symbolism, in the novel, Fahrenheit 451 facilitates the movement ofthe plot and acts as a tool to represent the abstract concepts. "
