TitleThe dissertation title need not be catchy or stylish but a simple and descriptive one. Thetitle length does not matter but it need not be unnecessarily long. For example: If the essay is about Economic development of China, India and Japan forthe period 2010 – 2011, then the title would be just the same – “Economic developmentof China, India and Japan for the period 2010 – 2011 ”.ii. AbstractThe Essay summary is a short description of the various topics presented in the essay. Itcan also contain a description about the sub-topics. The length of the summary wouldvary but it is usually not more than one - one & a half page, irrespective of the essaylength. The idea of a summary is to subtly and concisely touch on all the topics of thedissertation and take the reader through the theme of the entire content. A summary isusually a starting point of any essay and in that the reader decides whether or not theessay is worth reading. iii. IntroductionAs the name suggests the introduction introduces the essay topic to the reader. Theintroduction length varies but it is usually not more than 4 pages. Content more than 4pages may suggest that the introduction has overlapped the body of the essay.(MADSEN, D 1992) iv. Literature ReviewThe synopsis of the essay gives information about the methodology used for deriving aspecific conclusion. This section derives the authenticity and reliability of the contentwritten by the author. The Methodology elaborates on the following points:1. Why a particular topic was chosen?2. What is said differently in this research compared to the earlier research?3. What are the research methods undertaken by the writer? For example,Questionnaire, Statistical analysis and so on.4. How did the writer reach specific conclusions, if any, about the research subject?v. DiscussionThe discussion is the main work that is elaborated in detail and its length may varydepending on the proposed size of the essay. The size of the essay can be derived eitherby the writer individually depending on the type of research being undertaken or by afaculty if the writer is a student who is submitting the essay as an assignment.vi. Conclusions and RecommendationsUsually conclusions and recommendations may be separately presented one after anotherbut it does not really matter. The quality of the content is what matters to the reader. Conclusions are the facts that were discovered after the thorough research of a subjectmatter. Recommendations are future action points and they can be generic or specific. Conclusions or Recommendations is a critical part of the essay because this section helpsin understanding the depth of research done by the author.(SKWIRE, D & SKWIRE, S1990)vii. ReferencesThe references given for various topics in the essay are very important because they makeit evident that the author is not using plagiarized content. The content in an essay shouldnot be copy paste; the content should be original and ideas taken from other authorsshould be presented by giving their references.a) Number of ReferencesThe essay references should neither be too many nor too less. There is no guideline aboutthe number of references to be given for a particular essay because it depends on thelength of the essay. For instance, if the essay is 1000 words long then giving 4-6references should be enough whereas if the essay length goes up to 10,000 – 15000 wordsthen giving 10 -15 references will look good.b) Reference StyleThe style in which references are given is as important as giving references itself.Majorly there are 4-5 types of style guides that are used by the academic and otherindustries that elaborate on how to give references. Style guides such as Chicago manualof style, MLA, APA and Harvard are commonly used to write dissertations.c) Why use Style Guides?Style guides are used to present a subject matter in an industry level format that can beunderstood easily by the veterans and practitioners of that particular industry. viii. Importance of Dissertation SectionsWriting is a profession that allows one to organize thoughts in a structured manner. Thepresentation of an essay or any other document such as marketing collateral carries aspecific structure.Following a particular style guide to present content in a structured manner is essentialfor the reasons mentioned below:a. Easy document navigationb. Increases content readabilityc. Increases the readers reading speed and ability to grasp the contentd. It becomes easier to edit the document and recommend changes to the authore. Style guide is also used as a distinguished protocol for a particular industry(BOLKER, J 1998) ix. References1.
