  • "Information System Strategy and Development – Assignment 1 – TRANSGAS Case StudyWith reference to software engineering concepts, a high quality software product is onlygenerated when it is managed with a centralized authority and with strict restriction on theaccess of source code. However, this statement was rectified as the self-determined structurein which the source code was accessible to client free of charge also produced sufficientresults and high integrity products were developed for open source community (WGSL,2000).1.2 Summary of the Open source Software ADOPTION: an academicperspectiveOSS (open source software) is exploited in a social online environment in a community ofscattered users, each contributing to the software modification as per the client requirements.Obstruction in educational zone was removed by extensive deployment of these productacademic institutions. Extensive studies revealed two aspects of employing the open source(OSS) or proprietary source software systems in academic circle for information handling intheir IT department. Research methodology involved exploring over twenty plus journals and articles fordepicting the preferred way of network computational security in academic institutes.Comparison between open source and traditional software was done and four distinctivephases were outlined including virtual classrooms, online assessment, library databasemanagement systems and academic administrative department. Educational open source software systems have made the institutions an active element of thecyberspace globally. Contributing factors for the widespread use of free and open sourcesoftware programs in education sector are low cost, increased reliability and data integrity, optimum performance level, network security infrastructure, time-to-time bug removal and asteadfast improvement in the open source software development (Terbuc, 2006). 2 Comparison and Contrast The first paper discusses about the research methodologies for use of OSS systems incommercial organizations. It included the study of commercial organizations to produce theirown software or to obtain it from the open source community. This study summarized therelated search areas to review the library and the journals’ database through an automatedsystem and then manually by searching the open source conference articles in May 2009which generated 237 articles from which the un necessary and duplicated articles wereseparated and then a net total of 19 were selected. On the basis of these business models weredefined for an organizational structure. The second document examines about the research methodologies for use of OSS systems inacademic organizations. It included the study of academic organizations to utilize the OSSsoftware from the open source community or to use proprietary software for maintaininginformation database in an academic institute. This type of software system allows a highdegree of will to change, modify the existing system into a new and modernized one.14 | P a g e Information System Strategy and Development – Assignment 1 – TRANSGAS Case StudyThis report abridged the correlated search vicinity to reassess the library and the journals’database and searching the open source conference articles. Reviews and statistics revealedthe successful execution of OSS system in the academic foundations internationally. Theperception of un-restricted access and the abundance of educational blogs have removedhindrances in the academic sector. Due to this, twenty articles were evaluated for providing aframework for academic institutions information system control and its strategies. However,OSS development has potential disadvantages in the educational sector as well because it ischallenging for beginners and the source code availability is useless for users if the endproduct do not interest them . But on the other hand, digitization makes the courseavailability to the education community globally making the administrative departmentbecomes less involved das the instructors and students share the same medium of e-learning.Additionally, the improvement in OSS systems is basically dependant on thee-learningindustry.3 ConclusionOSS had a drastic influence on the IT sector worldwide. Dominating in certain areas, OSS iswidely used in web server and software development.OSS community attracts brilliant andenthused source code developers who are not a member of commercial organization. Havingthe authority to modify the source code without any central framework management and withun-restricted access to the debugging tools, the developers share the capability to fix bugsenhancing the output parameters associated with the software product. OSS system isconsidered a hypothesis to formulate a way for problem solving. This is achieved because of the innovative ideas of vendors, clients and the source codedevelopers that working collaboratively will generate better results. Over the years, OSSsystem rationally modified towards a business-friendly and amalgam conception by changinginto commercial software globally. With passing days, increased number of enterprisesadopts open source software elucidation because the global OSS industry is the fastestgrowing IT industries to date. It is evaluated that OSS industry will become the IT marketleader in client server systems.15 | P a g e Information System Strategy and Development – Assignment 1 – TRANSGAS Case StudyReferencesAladwani, A.
