The Early Childhood Professional
Assessment: Leadership Action Plan
Description: You are the educational leader at the early childhood centre. The preschool room leader approaches you to share concerns about a newly appointed early childhood educator who is feeling overwhelmed by the expectations and workload associated with pedagogical documentation. While the educator demonstrates strong relationships with children and meaningful engagement in daily practice, they are experiencing difficulty maintaining ongoing critical reflection and keeping programming up to date. Consequently, documentation has begun to fall behind, placing additional pressure on the room leader and the wider team.
To address this situation, use the template provided to:
Section A- Identify the problem
Identify two problems/issues of practice
List the potential causes
How does this issue impact various stakeholders?
Section B - Leadership theory in practice
Outline the chosen leadership theory you would use and provide the rationale behind.
How could you apply the chosen leadership style in practice (provide concrete examples)
Section C - SMART leadership goal
Develop 1 SMART goal to address the issue.
Section D - Action plan
Create an elaborated action plan.
This involves the role and responsibilities of the educators and/or room leader, methods of communication, resources and support required, support provided to educators, tools to measure success, and the timeline to review the progress.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
Ignoring the Scenario: Don't write a generic essay about leadership and management. Every point must relate back to the new educator who is struggling with documentation.
Identifying problems without analysis: Without any analysis, it means you do not demonstrate critical thinking skills.
Forgetting Stakeholders: If you only talk about the educator, you cannot get top marks in Section A. You must discuss the Room Leader, families, children and service overall quality.
Vague Goals: Avoid goals like "She will get better at documentation." Use the specific structure provided in the example image.
Missing the "Action": Your Action Plan (Section D) needs to be practical. Imagine another leader picked up your plan, would they know exactly what steps to take tomorrow?
