CASE STUDY
Cody, age 4 years old, is admitted to hospital with unexplained weight loss, nausea, vomiting, dysuria and lethargy. He weighs 15.5 kg. After examination by his physician, Cody is ordered a chest X-ray, blood glucose level, complete blood count and a urinalysis. As well, he is to have dimenhydrinate 1.25mg/kg q6h prn for nausea. Your pharmacy stocks Dimenhydrinate 15mg/5ml strength. Cody's parents are anxious about the admission and diagnosis of type one diabetes. Cody and his parents are from a small, rural Northern community. Cody has been transferred to a larger urban center for admission, treatment with an endocrinologist and to gain specialized education.
The family has minimal support in the urban area, other than a young 18-year-old cousin that lives in a shared college dorm and have kept in contact with a religious leader who has relocated to the area from their rural town.
