Topic: Remote Sensing - LABORATORY: REMOTE SENSING DATA

1. Objectives

In-depth understand the exiting earth observation missions and remotely sensed data, and the relationship between sensor characteristics and targeted applications.

2. Assignments:

Perform research on existing remote sensors, their characteristics, and applications and submit a technical report.

2.1 - Research on the following types of satellite passive optical sensors. For each category, at least one sensor will be studied.

A. Multispectral sensors with different spatial resolutions

A1: Sensors with low spatial resolution (over 100 m)

A2: Sensors with medium spatial resolution (10-100 m)

A3: Sensors with high spatial resolution (<5 m)

B. Medium spatial resolution sensors with different spectral resolutions

B1: Multispectral sensors

B2: Hyperspectral sensors

C. Low spatial resolution sensors with different angular resolutions

C1: Sensors with one observation angle

C2: Sensors with multiple observation angles

For each sensor, please provide the following information at the least.

(1) Which satellite is this sensor on-board?

(2) When was the satellite launched? Is the sensor system still functioning?

(3) What are the characteristics of the satellite orbit?

(4) What are the spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal resolutions of the sensor system?

(5) What kinds of scanning mechanics are employed by the sensor system?

(6) How many detectors are used and what types of detectors are used?

(7) What are major applications of the sensor system?

(8) How the data acquired by the sensor system are distributed?

For each type of sensors, compare and contrast the studied sensors in terms of their characteristics and targeted applications.

2.2 - Research on the satellite LiDAR sensor, ICESat-GLAS. Describe the characteristics of the satellite ICEsat and the main objective, characteristics, and products of GLAS. Provide an example of applications of GLAS. Discuss the ICESat-2 mission and ATLAS in terms of the differences from ICESat and GLAS, respectively.
