Criminal justice professionals use predictive analytics to look at data from multiple sources and consider the best course of action. The process of predictive analysis involves using data and statistics to inform decisions and is applicable in many aspects of our lives. Predictive analysis is used by officers in law enforcement, corrections, probation, and parole to prevent and respond to crime and to improve police-community relations.
Consider that your agency has recently received a grant to support predictive policing efforts, so each department must compile a report advising the best way to spend the funds. Your supervisor has tasked you with examining, researching, and drafting a report that shows established research on the use of predictive policing in the policing environment.
Select 1 jurisdiction in your local area as the focus for this assessment. (I LIVE IN BROOMFIELD, COLORADO).
Research the predictive-policing techniques used by this jurisdiction and any recent changes they have made, if known. Note: If your local jurisdiction does not provide data on predictive policing, select a different state or use a federal example for this assignment.
Writee aa report in response to your supervisor's request in which you examine the use of predictive analysis in the policing environment.
Include the following in your report:
- Summarize the goals and objectives of predictive policing and how it works. Summarize your research findings on the current predictive techniques used in criminal justice in the jurisdiction you selected.
- Identify the positive and negative consequences of predictive policing. Summarize the successes and failures resulting from existing or former predictive-policing programs. Explain the effect of predictive policing on police-community relations. Provide specific examples that are relevant to this jurisdiction and are supported by research.
- Advocate for a specific change in the use of predictive policing that will help alleviate 1 or more of the negative consequences of predictive policing in the jurisdiction you selected. Explain your reasoning.
