Instructional Design in Online Education

The growth of online education programs has provided a wealth of knowledge regarding instructional design and its application in online learning environments.

The extent to which instructional design influences online course development varies by instructor. However, there are universal considerations given to the characteristics of online learners, characteristics of online learning environments, course management tools, and technologies.

Therefore, understanding online course development, and the skills and planning it entails, will ensure that your instructional decisions are grounded in principles of instructional design and online learning.

For this Discussion, review the Learning Resources and scholarly literature. Consider the history of instructional design and online education. Reflect on the relationship between the two and the potential influence of instructional design on your delivery of online instruction.

Write an explanation of how instructional design and online education may influence each other. Then, describe how instructional design might influence your role as a future online instructor. Be specific and provide support from the Learning Resources and scholarly literature.
