Auburn University is a public institution that was founded in the year 1856. It has undergraduate enrollment of around 20,221, its setting is suburban, and the campus area is 1,875 acres. It has a semester based academic calendar. Auburn University is ranked 82 in the 2012 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities.
The Tiger sports teams participate in the NCAA Division I Southeastern Conference and the influx of football fans makes Auburn the fifth-largest city in the state on game days. The freshmen do not have to live on campus; actually a dorm room isn’t even ensured. Because of space restraints, first year students are awarded on campus living assignments on the basis of first come, first served.
As a land, sea, and space grant institution, Auburn University gets federal funding for research projects which benefit the larger community. The school has an Urban Studio; here students can compete in community projects and a Rural Studio, targets at finding housing solutions for the residents of West Alabama. The research projects include the storage facilities for nuclear waste. The university also provides unique programs, such as the wireless engineering program in the country. The notable Auburn alumni include famed college football coach Vince Dooley and a handful of NASA astronauts—such as Kathryn Thornton, second American woman to travel in the space.
