Why conduction band overlaps with valence band in mg, Chemistry

Because Mg is metal. We know from the properties of the metal it will mallable, ductile, and good conductor for electricity. So, for better conduction the conduction band must overlap with valence band. Why because there isno forbidden region between the conduction and valence bond so they both are merge there is no external energy is needed to pump the electrons from the conduction band to valence band.
