What is the importance of the glucose blood level for human health?
The glucose blood level (glycemia) must be kept normal. If it is abnormally low there is not enough glucose to supply the energetic metabolism of the cells. If it is abnormally and chronically high it causes severe harm to the peripheral nerves, the skin, the retina, the kidneys and other significant organs and it may predispose to cardiovascular diseases (acute myocardial infarction, strokes, thrombosis, etc). If it is acutely too high medical emergencies such as diabetic ketoacidosis and the hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state may occur.
