The functional (filtering) unity of the kidneys is the nephron a nephron is made of efferent arteriole, afferent arteriole, glomerulus, Bowman's capsule, proximal tubule, loop of Henle, distal tubule and collecting duct, in each kidney there are about one million nephrons.
