Ammonia (NH3) diffuses freely across biological membranes according to its concentration gradient. However, ammonium (NH+4) ion requires a specific transport system to cross the biological membrane. In recent years, activities and regulation of ammonium transport system have been studied in a number of N2-fixing systems.
