This is because human babies develop very slowly in the womb and are born at a stage when they are still very undeveloped when compared to the ape species: the brain of the human newborn is only one quarter its full size whereas those of chimpanzee infants are already half grown at birth. Most of the human baby's development therefore takes place outside the womb, with the brain only reaching full size at around a year of age.
