Heterochromatin: Compact, gene-poor areas of a genome, which are enriched in the simple sequence repeats. As it may be impossible to clone, heterochromatin is generally ignored while calculating the percentage of a genome which has been sequenced. Heterochromatin was originally recognizes as the regions of the genome which stained differently to an euchromatin (gene-rich areas).
