There are three main types -

 

  • The Shunt Connected DC motor in which the armature coils are connected in parallel with the field coils

 

  • The Series Connected DC motor in which the armature coils are connected in series with the field coils

 

  • The Compound DC motor in which the armature coils are connected in series/parallel with the field coils
