Where is Romeo?

One of the most famous questions people ask to themselves in their life is: Who am I going to spend the rest of my life with?. It's a quest that people have once they're born. It's difficult because you only have one chance to get it right, although there are a lot of people that get marry  again, again, and again in todays society. However, before all that happens, there's that moment where someone doesn't know if that person is the right or the indicated one. That space is call romanticism. Romanticism is when, most of the cases, the boy seduces the girl and makes her believe that he is the right guy for her famous question. A guy should be expert on this, however, many men today have lost the touch of being romantic to their soulmate. Therefore, some girls have spoken about this concern for example Dorothy Parker. Dorothy Parker wrote a poem call "One Perfect Rose". In that poem Dorothy seems like she likes that perfect rose that he gives her  but in the last stanza, Parker reveals that everything she have said down from that last stanza was full of sarcasm. In her poem, there are some problems that reflects the lack of romanticism that exist today with boys and girls. The problems are: The one-night stand relationships, the monotonous relationships, and the lack of confrontation.

To overcome the lack of romanticism in this generation, the one-night stand relationships should come to an end. A one-night stand relationship is when a girl and a boy do what they're supposed to do in a month or a year in one night. Most of this is known actually from their own peers and from the media- the internet, songs, films, and television. (Weissbourd 5) The worst part is that when the next day arrives is like they forgot who they slept with. When this kind of relationship happens, there's no time to seduce a person or to tell them poems or to even know their favorite color. In the poem "One perfect rose" by Parker shows that the same thing happened to her.  On her poem she says, "A single flow'r he sent me, since we met" Parker felt the one-night stand on a perfect rose. The main reason why this generation likes that kind of relationship is because they don't want to commit. On a research made by Jamie E. Banker and his colleagues, it shown that commitment is one of the way that a person should know that they are in a romantic relationship. (Banker 176) Without commitment to the soul mate, there's no trust and without trust being Romeo would be impossible.

However, there is a solution to this problem  but it's a little complicated because it would require that the boy and the girl make an effort to rescue the romanticism in a relationship.  To start it's required for the boy to make an effort of becoming Romeo in some moments. Someone that writes her poems, buys her lunch, go to the movies together, and holds the hand of her in front of their friends or parents. Yet, the hardest part is for the girl because she has to say "No" to the first couple poems, or kissing attempts from the boy. The girl has to say "No" because if she says "Yes" on the first poem it would become a one-night stand again. Just like the song from Ricardo Arjona "Tell me No": "Tell me no, thinking of a yes and leave everything else to me; that if it becomes easy love will become fragile and one will stop to dream"  She  also has to keep in mind when to say "yes" because saying "No" all of the time will crush the hopes for the other person. Being romantic with someone is difficult because instead of a one-night stand, it can actually be the eternity.

The other problem that this society have in order for romanticism to be fully recover is to get rid of the monotonous relationships. Parker in her last stanza said "Why is it no one ever sent me yet One perfect limousine, do you suppose?" In this sentence the reader can tell that the author is tired of getting flowers. The boys that she has fallen in love with gave her perfect flowers only. She was tired of getting the same flower so she wanted something different. Parker is tired of being in a monotonous relationship where all she got was a sad perfect flower. Many relationships now a day are very monotonous. They would eat in the same place, the boy would get the same thing to the girl and viceversa. When a relationship enters a running wheel like the ones for the hamster, the relationship is destroying itself. There can't be any romanticism because the other person will know exactly what s/he is doing.  Humans tend to like things very much until they have them, and when they have them, they don't pay attention to them anymore. What Parker is basically asking for is for an unexpected relationship. She gives an idea of what they can get her next time but she wants something that can surprise her. Therefore the solution for this problem is for someone in the relationship to be creative in a romantic way. When we talk about being creative and romantic means that will "require feelings more than physical attraction".( Banker 178) For valentines day most people would give a perfect flower and some perfect chocolates, but is that really being creative? Creativity makes you to take a step forward in seducing that person even if it's the wife, girlfriend, or the future girlfriend. Creativity makes you get out of that racing wheel, in other words out of the monotonous life.

Last but not least, the last problem that is affecting romanticism on this era is the lack of confrontation. Ok, the soulmate was found. Here's where everything ends and all of the sacrifices made are in play. To put the cherry on top of the ice cream, you... use a text?. Almost 82% of the couples now a day but "all that connectivity doesn't always translate to greater relationship bliss." ( Sifferlin 1) n this generation there are many people with soft knuckles because they haven't been use to knock on the door and ask for the girl. Now, people text the other person and say "Hey, I'm here" and waits impatiently for the lady to come and hop in the car. Now going back to the poem, it seems like that's how it was back then as well. "All tenderly his messenger he chose" meaning that the one perfect flower that she got it wasn't even coming from him. Parker describes the messenger as tenderly but what she was doing was being sarcastic. She's probably saying inside of her "Really? Really? you couldn't come up here and give me another perfect rose?" People are getting used to this and they are making for technology to kill what's rest of Romeo. For example online dating. Online dating are for people that are not confident about themselves and they think that it would be hard to conquer someone. This has made "people more disposable" or  "Internet dating may be partly responsible for a rise in the divorce rates" and that "Low quality, unhappy and unsatisfying marriages are being destroyed as people drift to Internet dating sites"(Slater 1)

This would be hard to stop because even technology is a major part of this era. But, what if there's a way for technology and romanticism to mix? The best way to counterattack problem is by using that problem as a solution. A text in the morning or a call is romantic yet that doesn't mean that the boy waiting inside the car, is not able to go to the door of where the dream girl is waiting for. There's got to be a balance. It's time to stop sending the messenger to the door and be courageous because watching Romeo leave this society is awful.

There's no option to stop global warming, there's no way to find the cure for cancer or HIV but there is a way to bring romanticism back. This society has encounter problems to do that thanks to different kind of relationships. The one-night stand relationships are the worst. There's no romanticism and people hate commitment. Until this society understand that commitment is a plays a big role for romanticism to come back, there won't be any relationships that last longer than a blink of an eye. Then once in a relationship, what's destroying romanticism is the routine. Having a monotonous relationship is very harmful for Romeo. There's no time for couples to keep on doing the same thing over, and over again. The best relationships are when they are unique and unpredictable. Therefore, creativity is a big solution to that problem. And the final problem for romanticism to be fully recover is to meet the person face to face. Online dating and messengers at the door is not the way out of this problem. There has to be a moment of courage, where there's got to be a fight for what one loves so much. There's is no time to be ashamed of who you are. Romanticism will no recover from this depression until those problems are fight. Romanticism will not breath again until this society as whole understand that Romeo is leaving for ever.
