For your chosen topic: You are to write a report for a hypothetical manager of a medium sized New Zealand business. The hypothetical company has approximately 100 staff who are located in same town, but are spread across three different buildings. The company currently uses a separate server for Staff login to access shared hard drive space, printers and the like. The following services are also run on separate servers: Email, Web server, Human Resource Record Management, Intranet and dedicated backup.
Senior management are given smart phones as part of their job. Those phones are not configured to connect to the company in any way, other than the external website via a normal web browser. The manager has heard of the concept of virtualization but is not particularly clear on what it means, what the benefits are and how it might be implemented. The manager has heard that "cloud computing is bad" and is not likely to want to use cloud. The manager will not put Human Resource Record Management into the cloud under any circumstances. You are to provide a report that outlines the concept of virtualization, and gives at least two benefits of using virtualisation over the manager's current setup. You are then required to describe the steps that need to be undertaken to virtualise at least one of the servers the manager currently uses. For this part of the report you can use technical documents rather than academic documents to describe the process. If you choose the Intranet as one of your options, you should also consider how the phones might connect securely to it, so senior management have more access to resources while off-site. You should assume the manager wants a clear overview of the process and not a bullet point list of each step that is required.
