Option 1:

 

Type of written document: Short Business Memo Report

 

 Assume that your office needs a piece of equipment such as photocopier, fax, digital camera, computer, printer, scanner, shredder, or alike. Do the research necessary to write a convincing internal proposal to your boss. You feel that your boss will be respective to your request, so you can use the direct approach.

Refer to the handout distributed in class. Module your work on the correct sample contained in the handout. Note, that depending on what you will be writing on, you may have more headings than shown in the sample.

Option 2

 

Type of written document: Unsolicited Proposal

 

Look around your campus, analyses your life as a student and think of a problem that you are interested in. May be it is related to campus parking, food services, students' schedules,work load, social activities, specific course, or other. What type of solution may be possible? What type of initiative would you recommend to enhance the life of students at Centennial?

Write a proposal to obtain an approval for your new initiative. You are planning to send this proposal to the person that will have the authority to implement your initiative. It might be Ann Buller, the President of the College or the Dean of you school (Barry O'Brien) or other person of authority. Since the proposal is to be sent in an email message, you will need to plan your message carefully. You want the decision maker to give your proposed initiative serious consideration.

The proposal is unsolicited, so you will need to provide sound reasons to convince your audience that a new initiative is needed, and you will need to show how implementing your initiative will benefit the students. Your will need to establish the importance of and need for the program and provide some details about the implementation such as costs, timelines, and content.Explain why the initiative is needed, what content would be included, and how students will benefit. Make certain you explain why your reader should take action and add the initiative

When putting your proposal together, make sure you include the following:

• Description of problem/current situation/
• Needs analysis/Data Analysis
• Summary of research
• Recommendation to proceed with the development and implementation of your program/initiative

You may conduct any type of primary research:interviews, questionnaires, surveys of yourcolleagues. You may also conduct some secondary research by reviewing another university's and college's offerings. Citing other schools that have similar initiatives will support your proposal to implement the initiative. To strengthen your argument, you may also want to search for relevant articles in newspapers and periodicals.
