You agree that the best way to learn about the patient's cultural beliefs is to ask them. According to the Purnell model for cultural awareness there are several key assumptions that need to be established in order to ensure that nurses are culturally aware of their patients. Some of these assumptions include, all nurses need to have similar information concerning different cultures, one culture is not better than another, culture has a powerful influence over health care, prejudices can be eliminated by understanding the culture, and professionals need to have cultural education frequently (Redding's, 2000).
