Problem 1.6:
In 1656, Otto von Guericke of Magdeburg presented his invention, a vacuum pump, through a demonstration that became a popular sensation. A metal sphere made of two hemispheres (now known as the Magdeburg hemispheres) was evacuated, so that a vacuum would hold the two pieces together. Von Guericke would then have several horses (by one account, 30 of them, in two teams of 15) pulling, unsuccessfully, to separate the hemispheres. The demonstration would end with the opening of a valve that removed the vacuum and allowed the hemispheres to separate. Suppose that the diameter of the sphere is 50 cm and the sphere is completely evacuated. The sphere is hung from the ceiling and you pull the other half with the force of your body weight. Will the hemispheres come apart? Support your answer with calculations.
wave-connected. (Note: The number of parallel paths is equal to the number of poles for lap windings, while it is equal to 2 for wave windings.)
Derive an equation for the latent heat of fusion that is a function of the radius of the particle. Using this equation, for a copper particle that has a radius of 2.5 nm, find the ratio of the latent heat of fusion of the particle to the laten..
Determine the analog output voltage when the binary input code is 1100. Also, find what reference voltage is to be used in order to obtain the corresponding decimal output voltage.
What is the mass of the water in the container, assuming that all the heat lost by the copper is gained by the water?
Determine the composition of the vapor at boiling point and determine the Dew point of the mixture - determine the composition of streams leaving the first FV unit.
Suppose the various color frequency and intensity values that comprise a color analysis are combined into a single numerical value, C, for a particular yellow dye. During a test period in which the reactor conditions are carefully controlled and t..
The leaving vapors will contain water vapor at a pressure equivalent to the equilibrium vapor pressure of water at 15°C. If a suction pressure of 2.0 in Hg absolute is to be maintained by the jet, estimate the pounds of steam required per hour to ..
What is the kinetic energy and the potential energy of ball B at point II? The potential energy is given by PE mgz, where m is the mass in kilograms, g is the gravitational constant (9.81 m/s2), and z is the distance in meters.
Consider the operation of a dc shunt motor that is affected by the following changes in its operating conditions. Explain the corresponding approximate changes in the armature current and speed of the machine for each change in operating condition..
It is desired to use 28.32 m 3 /min of air (metered at a pressure of 101.3 kPa and 294.1 K) in a process. This amount of air which is at rest enters the fan suction at a pressure of 741.7 mm Hg and a temperature of 366.3 K and is discharged at a pres..
What mass of propane must be burned to furnish this amount of energy assuming the heat transfer process is 60.% efficient?
Ethylene and propylene are valuable monomers. A key step in the recovery of these materials is fractionation of the olefin from the corresponding paraffin (ethane or propane). These fractionation steps require refrigeration of the overhead condens..
