The Future of Newspapers

• Will newspapers soon become medium of the past?

Back in 2005, Rupert Murdoch (former head of News Corp) was already concerned about the fate of the newspaper industry.

"I believe too many of us editors and reporters are out of touch with our readers," Rupert Murdoch said in a speech to the American Society of Newspaper Editors. "No wonder that people, and in particular the young, are ditching their newspapers. Today's teens, twenty- and thirty-somethings don't want to rely on a god-like figure from above to tell them what's important, and they certainly don't want news presented as gospel."

The Readership Institute was a newspaper industry group established in 1999 to "find ways to draw people back." Skim this article titled "Reinventing the Newspaper for Young Adults":

Do you think that in the electronic age of TV and the Internet it is possible to draw young people back to reading newspapers? What will newspapers have to do to draw in young audiences? Or do you think newspapers will fade out as sense-intensive multimedia takes over? What has been the newspaper circulation & readership decline in the last 20 years in the United States?

1. No, personally I don't think that many young people will not longer read a newspapers and it might be disappeared within 10years. Because nowadays, many young people are getting the information by using the Internet with their computer and smartphone or they also can get the information by watching the television news. There might be the way to bring back the young audiences before but I think that newspapers can still draw out to the people who are in the middle ages or older people but they cannot draw the young people anymore.

Like the case in 1900s there was a case "Yellow Journalism" to bring more readers and had a competition between Joseph Pulitzer's New York World and William Randolph Hearst's New York Journal. They were having a competition by having a drawer who can make a better cartoon to attract the young readers. But in 21century even if they can bring back of the young adults to read a newspapers, most of them could feel prefer to reading by smartphones or computer screens because most of young people already used to with to see the information by smartphone so they might be feel uncomfortable when they are reading in a letter in a newspaper. When I was living in New York some of the stations had free newspapers for the public but I rarely saw young people who are seeing the newspapers but they are only focusing on their phones.

Author Nocola Slawson's The Guardian article, "The Eagle Dares: Independent Goes Out of Print on a Scoop",(Martch 26, 2016) details Independent newspaper made a final edition on march 26th. They moved to newspaper edition to digital format edition. So which means many other newspapers also going to do a multimedia or most of them already doing it right now. Digital media made a decline of newspaper circulation and readership in the United States. According to Annual Report on American Journalism said that digital circulation and readership get increased while the newspaper's circulation and readership are decreasing. Digital media such as Kindles and e-replica edition bring lot of readerships.

For example, The Wall Street Journal, which started of the paying online site for more than a decade, they bring with 449,000 paid digital readerships. They also mentioned that since 1990 the numbers of newspapers are declining. As a result, the newsroom workforces are also slowly decreases. In the August 7, 2015 Newspaper Death Watch article, "New York Times Passes 1M Digital Subscribers," author Paulgillin explains that until 1970s the newspaper had a 80percent of revenue that came from the advertising. But when the Internet shows off they made a online version of newspaper to adjust the new trend so that they can still make a profits. However, the newspaper companies could not earn more money when they earned mostly from the advertisements like in the past. In conclusion, I think that newspapers cannot win the electronic age of TV and the Internet in 21century. Independent newspaper, Cincinnati Post, Kentucky Post, and Rocky Mountain News are the examples of newspapers have died. (512words)

2. It is admirable how much online technology is able to do when it is compared to a printed item. The newspaper I am comparing their online edition versus their print edition is the Los Angeles Business Journal. This medium includes important information primarily to people interested in business. It is a very well written newspaper, as well as their online edition, which enable entrepreneurs to gather significant knowledge for their professional goals.

Moreover, its glossy material at the printed edition allows it to stand out from all the other newspapers that are made from the original material of a newspaper that leaves black stains on the hands. Its presentation therefore printed or online is very professional. Indubitably, there are a few differences that are obvious.

First and foremost there is an abundance of information within the online version than within the printed version. Although at the printed edition we only read this weeks news, however at the online edition we are also able to read about the latest local news, events, lists, special reports, podcasts etc. On the printed version the editors are not able to include all this information due to the limited space available. The editors need to pick and choose what they will post on the printed edition and will necessarily leave numerous things out so they can publish a newspaper and not a book. Therefore, the information we receive from the printed edition is limited where the information we receive online is plenty full.

Another significant difference is the speed that we are able to receive the information that interests us. Within the printed edition we have to look up the title, the page and even find the page thereafter. However, within the online edition this time frame is less because anything we need to look up it is categorized, therefore it enables the readers to go to their topic of interest with just a click of their mouse. It is also obvious that the information we gather we are able to receive through reading, through audio and video, therefore we save even more time with the online edition than the printed one.

Lastly, the online edition includes subscriptions that may interest their readers. One subscription that is very interesting at the Los Angeles Business Journal is the "The Book of Lists." This item is available only to subscribers and gives information about industry leaders and assists entrepreneurs to develop their businesses. The accumulation of such data within one medium is undeniably valuable.

Although I am a fan of printed books, however I believe that there is more to be found online than at the printed edition of a newspaper. The pricing online sometimes might seem higher but in the long run it might help save money. (Words 461)
