A local bus company announced a change to a large number of regular bus routes that serve low-income areas where a large percentage of the residents are dependent on public transit to get around on a daily basis. The bus company management claimed that the purpose of the changes was to create a new “transit corridor” that will better serve the residents. A group of local residents is protesting the changes, claiming that they were instead designed to kill local businesses along the existing routes and benefit developers of new apartment buildings and a shopping center planned along the proposed new routes. Both the management and residents refer to conflicting results from competing surveys of area residents that support their respective positions.
