Question: Need help writing a 6 page paper from The Aeneid by Virgil and the City of Ladies by Christine de Pizan it must include

7. Research: Your research must include 3 academic secondary sources that explicitly treat the texts that you are analyzing.

8. Translation: Your analysis of at least one of the primary texts must take into account the issue of translation in at least one moment in your paper. You may satisfy this requirement by focusing on one of the following methods:

• a comparison of the translation and the original text in its foreign language, which would therefore also include a significant analysis of the original foreign language

• a comparison of various translations of the original text (but without reference to the original text), highlighting the different choices of the various translations

• a consideration of the idiomatic nature of the translation in English, which would highlight the (cultural, historical, etc.) difference that English translation makes

• Didactic texts: What kind of lesson does each text teach, and why is it significant that each text uses this story to teach its lesson? What's similar and what's different about the way the two didactic texts treat their lesson? Are there contradictions, in each text, between the explicit lesson and the fiction used to display that lesson? How? Note: the question isn't just asking you to figure out the lesson; after all, the lesson is often stated very clearly in the fable. The question is asking you to analyze how the specific images and characters in each story change the way we understand the explicit or implicit lesson. For instance, if a fable ended with "Drink a lot of water," well, that's a nice lesson. But why is it significant that this particular lesson is mediated through the fable's specific language (for instance, a story about a camel would have a very different effect than a story about a sea turtle, even if the lesson for both stories is the same: "Drink a lot of water"). What's the significance of "drink a lot of water" in a sea turtle story? How is the same lesson nevertheless different in a camel story?

• Home or homecoming: How does each text understand the significance of "home" or "homecoming"? Note that there is a fairly big difference between the theme of "home" and the theme of "homecoming," even though the latter might in some way depend on the former. How does "home" or "homecoming" change as we move from one text to another, and why is this shift significant?

• Gender: How are gender roles treated in each text? How are particular gender roles valued in each text? What is possible or impossible for a particular gender in this text? How does the treatment change from one to text to another and why is this shift significant?

• Heroism: How does each text understand the meaning of "hero" or "heroism"? You might link this question to the problem of "honor," depending on the text. How do these themes change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?

• Community: What is the significance of "community" in each text? This question is quite open-ended, since "community" might mean: city-state, polis, intimate group of like-minded individuals, family, etc. How do these themes change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?

• Love: How does each text present the theme of "love"? Why is "love" significant in each text, and not merely a reflex feeling or emotion? How does this theme change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?

• Loss: How does each text present the theme of "loss"? How is "loss" defined in each text (or in particular moments in the text), and how is the challenge of "loss" encountered? Is "loss" resolved or not? How, why, what's the significance of this resolution or this lack of resolution?). How do these themes change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?

• Action!: How does each text treat the theme of "action"? What leads to action, what prevents it? Why are these causal relations (what leads to action, and what prevents it) significant when thinking about human action in this text? How do these themes change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?

• Lying: How is the theme of "lying" or "deception" treated in each text? When does a character lie and how is the lie in these moments significant? Are we dealing with a "trickster" figure, or is lying more of an aberration? You might also link this theme to "disguise" or "manipulation of another." How do these themes change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?

• Violence: We often think of violence as abhorrent behavior, and yet literary texts often present violence as both necessary and even aesthetic. How does "violence" appear in each text and why is this appearance of violence significant? You might consider any number of variations on the theme: homicide (killing another human), suicide (killing of the self, killing oneself), violence against animals, violence against nature, violence against monsters or "the other," bloody violence, non-bloody (or indirect) violence, etc. The idea here is not to judge a character or the text for committing violence (we're not putting literature on trial here), but rather to ask how each text itself signals the value or significance of violence within this literary world. How do these themes change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?

• Storytelling: Why is the figure of the storyteller significant in each text? What roles does the storyteller have in each text, besides just adding in another layer of storytelling? Who tells stories and why? What are the effects of storytelling as a kind of action? How do these themes change from one text to another, and why is this change significant?
