Assignment : Conducting a z-Test
A researcher predicts that watching a film on institutionalization will change students' attitudes about chronically mentally ill patients. The researcher randomly selects a class of 36 students, shows them the film, and gives them a questionnaire about their attitudes. The mean score on the questionnaire for these 36 students is 70.
The score for a similar class of students who did not see the film is 75. The standard deviation is 12. Using the five steps of hypothesis testing and the 5% significance level (i.e. alpha = .05), does showing the film change students' attitudes towards the chronically mentally ill?
1. What does it mean to set alpha at .05? 2. What is your null hypothesis? Alternate hypothesis? 3. Is this a one-tailed or two-tailed hypothesis? 4. What is the critical z? 5. Suppose the obtained z was -2.5. Do you reject or fail to reject the null hypothesis? 6. State in words what you have found.
Let X be a single observation of an Exp(λ) random variable, which has pdf λ(x) =λ exp(-λx) if x ≥ 0, 0 if x
A university librarian wanted to determine if social sciences undergraduates had a preferred method for searching the Internet for sources for academic papers. Over a 5-day period she randomly surveyed 100 students who came into the CSUDH library and..
Use the normal approximation to the binomial to find the probability that all guests who arrive on July 1 will receive a room.
The students receive raw scores of 63 and 93, which correspond to z scores (often called the standard- ized scores) of -1 and 1.5, respectively. Find the mean and standard deviation of the distribution of raw exam scores.
Compute the mean monthly cost with a 95% confidence interval. Using the results of part (a) to estimate mean monthly cost within $7.5, do additional replications needed? If yes how many? If no why?
Explain why there are no individual differences in the numerator and in the denominator of the F ratio.
If the results on a nationally administered introductory statistics exam is normally distributed with a mean of 100 points and a standard deviation of eight points determine the following: a. describe the graph of the distribution b. find at the Z sc..
Calculate the mean, median, mode, variance, and standard deviation for the numeric data. Construct a histogram for median score values for male managers and female managers with respect to management style.
Describe each r value in words
Present a histogram of returns of high momentum, market, SMB and HML portfolios. Calculate time series of excess returns needed to test CAPM and Fama-French 3 factor model
Generate a frequency distribution and histogram describing this information. Do any of the portfolio values seem to be especially large or small compared to the others?
A sample of 100 yields x ¯ = 24. The population standard deviation is 12. If a = .05, find the acceptance/rejection region H_0 and determine if you accept or reject the hypothesis H_0 (Draw graph!).
