What is the radiation pressure (force/area) of a laser pointer on a heavy, highly absorbing surface? Assume that the laser has an output power of 1mW, a wavelength of 600nm, and a beam radi- us of 1mm. To do this problem, first compute the number of photons per unit time in the beam seen by the absorbing surface. Then compute the momentum transfer that occurs at the surface when a photon is absorbed. Finally, take the pressure to be the total momentum transfer per unit time per unit area. Write your answer in terms of Newtons of force per square meter of area (which is called a “Pascal”). Compare this pressure to the pres- sure of the atmosphere, which is about 100,000 Pascals. What if the surface is reflecting? Now do the same for a much more powerful laser with a peak intensity of 1015 W/cm2.
