Please read the format description in the Course Outline for further information about what is required. Also refer to the marking grid for this assessment - the marking criteria are mapped against the possible questions/ideas below.

Guide to Essay-

Below gives an example of how you might approach your essay. It is offered to break down the requirements of the marking criteria into 'do-able' pieces of work. It is not a requirement that you do it this way in every detail - but do be aware of the word limit.

Assessment Criteria-

1. Evaluate the case study by providing relevant, detailed & critical content regarding ethical concepts outlined through the course. An ethical decision making model has been employed recognizing conflicting theories & explanations.

2. An ability to articulate a professional ethical course of action resulting from the decision-making process.

3. A well prepared  essay, logically structured coherently argued, within the world limit, appropriately reference and documented through correct use of citations, quotations and reference list using Havard style.

Possible Question/ Ideas

  • What is ethics and why is it important in professional practice?
  • What is an ethical dilemma (ED) & why is focusing on EDs in practice crucial?
  • Explain what you think is the main EL) in the case study & given there are likely to be more than one, why the one you choose is the most important ED
  • Overview the Ethical Decision-making Model (e.g. Chenoweth & McAuliffe 2012 or McAuliffe 2014) and its potential value in how you respond to the ED

Applying the model  ....

  • Elaborate on the nature of the ED in '(Re)defining dilemma' step
  • Argue for who needs to be involved in '(Re)mapping legitimacy' step
  • Identify & critically consider relevant ethical & other knowledge in the '(Re)gathering information' step
  • Consider the range of options for this case given all the steps so far in the 'Alternative approaches' step
  • Provide a 'Critical analysis & evaluation' of what you have done in relation to the case study. and in relation to how adequate the model has been
  • Consider the range of options for this case given all the steps so far in the 'Alternative approaches step
  • Provide a 'Critical analysis & evaluation' of what you have done in relation to the case study, and in relation to how adequate the model has been

At each of the above steps or as appropriate, consider/apply the 4 'lenses' of:

  • cultural sensitivity
  • consultation
  • accountability &
  • critical reflection - and explain the value of each in relation to the care study.
  • Provide a concluding comment which brings all the key points together.

If you had a different point of view in the case study, how convincing would you find the argument you have outlined? (You don't have to answer this question heir. rather use it as a promo to review your work and ensure it is convincing, based in relevant knowledge, well argued etc).

The assessment is taking you to demonstrate that you can appropriately follow an ethical-making model to work through a practice dilemma.
