ASSESSMENT TASK

You are asked to prepare a 1,500-word report and 600-word blog to answer the following question.

Food on campus - what health and sustainability actions can be taken?

For this assessment we will be looking at the Deakin Food Charter and critiquing the literature in relation to its likely impact in one area.

The Deakin Food Charter takes action in 5 guiding principles: Healthy, Informed, Balanced, Easy, Sustainable.

This assignment will focus on the sustainable area. Specifically we will look at its aim of reducing food waste.

1. In your draft, include the following-- This component has been completed by the client and is attached:

Dot points on what will be covered in each subheading (limit is 1 A4 page! After that we stop reading):

1. In which part of the food system in Australia does most food waste occur and why?

2. How much food do Australians currently waste? Why? Compare this with global and on campus food waste.

3. How does food waste connect with the bidirectional relationship between food and the environment?

4. What needs to change at the government, business and consumer level to reduce food waste?

5. What is an example of a program overseas and an example of a program in Australia that has been successful in reducing food waste?

Include enough detail to show that you done background reading on each area and know what you will write about. No reference list required.

2. In your report- This component needs to be completed now:

Introduction:

Begin with an introduction (up to 200 words) to explain the format of the report and what is to come. Remember that these are the first words your marker will read, so always try to make a great first impression.

Provide background information about the topic.

Respond directly to the report question and clearly state what your report intends to achieve.

Provide an overview of some of the main points, or direction, of the report.

Be sure to revise the introduction in your final draft, so that it accurately reflects any changes you may have made to the body and conclusion of your report.

A definition of Healthy & Sustainable diets and/or food system could be provided here.

Part 1:

In which part of the food system in Australia does most food waste occur and why (200 words)?

Explain to the reader what a food system is and who the main players are.

Include information on where and how food is wasted at each part of the food system.

Part 2:

Research the amount of food that is wasted in Australia versus globally

Explain reasons that research has found for consumers wasting food

Discover how much food is wasted at Deakin and why

Part 3:

How does food waste connect with the bidirectional relationship between food and the environment (200 words)?

Explain what the bidirectional relationship between food and the environment is

Explain how food waste impacts on the environment.

Consider which resources beyond food are wasted when food is wasted.

Part 4:

What needs to change at the Australian government, business and consumer level to reduce food waste (300 words)?

Research and reference a local (Australian) example of reducing food waste successfully. Explain challenges that were faced in the project and how they were overcome.

Conclusion:

Finish with a conclusion (up to 200 words) summarising the report.

Conclusions are primarily for summing up what you have presented in the body of your report. No new information is presented in the conclusion. Use synonyms and paraphrasing so that you do not repeat all your main points word for word.

Summarise your argument and draw on some of the main points discussed, but not in too much detail.

Use the research and information you have compiled writing your report for your Blog post. No further research is needed. Expectations for blog posts:

• Well-written, engaging language that the general public can understand.

• Consider the audience: a well educated, informed audience like those who read The Conversation for example. Avoid writing a blog in a personal diary style.

• High quality grammar, spelling and full sentences.

• References formatted correctly (Vancouver).

• If images or videos are used, we suggest you use Pixabay or other sites where attribution free images are available. Even images need to be referenced.

• Headings, sub-headings and even dot points can be helpful.
