Congested traf?c states in empirical observations and microscopic simulations
Questions to answer with this model:
The idea is that once you've written the traffic model, you can explore the dynamics and write up some explanations. I want you to start with the straight-line model since it is easier then make it work for a ring road.
1. Straight line model
Specific questions to explore with your model:
a) What happens if all the cars start with a large gap (say 50 m) and start at rest? A small gap?
b) What happens if all the cars are moving initially except the first one, which starts from a stop?
2. Ring road
For the ring road, things should get more interesting.
a) Suppose we have a 1000m road with 50 cars. What's the car spacing? If we start with all cars at v0, How long does steady traffic hold up? What happens if we add more cars or take away cars?
b) How do the parameters a and b affect the behavior (see remarks in the table above and vary a and b)? Can you relate changes in a and b to driver behavior on the road?
Submit:
1) 2-3 page paper in PDF or Word.
2) Your Matlab code for the ring road case and one set of parameters
