In the 1968 science fiction movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the spaceship doscovery was sent on a mission to Jupiter. Astronaut Frank Poolie in Discovery wanted to know the location of the Sun-Jupiter barycenter, where barycenter is defined as te center of mass between those two bodies that are orbiting each other. Feel free to look up all appropiate Sun and Jupiter data to wrok these problems. The distance of the center of the sun to jupiter barycenter is defined by x.
a) What is x, the distance from the center of the sun to the Sun-Jupiter barycenter? You can calculate it by knowing the center of mass of the Sun-Jupiter system.
you dont have to search for the masses of the Sun and Jupter. Just use a symbol. ex: Ms for mass of sun
b)Using real data, determine if the Sun-Jupiter barycenter is located inside or outside the Sun. Carefully explain your answer.
c) At what distance from the center of the Sun(xD) will the force of gravity between the Sun and Discovery is equal to the same force of Jupiter and Discovery? Write your answer in terms of the distance between the centers of Sun and Jupiter (R).
