Writing a literature review will also help you to be better informed when you collect your data and write up your results.
Literature Review(approx. 1500 words, can do 10% less or more)
The Main Idea
The Literature Review undertakes a critical analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of existing important studies and research and should show which issues require new or further study - this should indicate how the body of knowledge could be improved. For the research you are undertaking you should aim to conduct a literature review that argues for, and demonstrates the value of, the work you are doing.
Being Critical and Searching the Literature
The Literature Review should focus on credible sources and should be critical, in that the strengths and weaknessesof the sources in relation to your topic / question are discussed and understood. It is important to look for credible sources - that is ones that can be trusted.
Reading and Taking Notes
You should keep your research question in mind while you are reading. Questions to ask while reading include:
- What is the main idea/argument/position that the author is presenting?
- What are the strengths of the idea/argument/position?
- What are the weaknesses of the idea/argument/position?
You should make notes as you go along - these notes should be used later when you organize your ideas into a logical argument.
Writing up the Literature Review
Your review should have an introduction and be organized by main arguments / main points which logically come to a final summary and conclusions.
