To some, the ultimate and current intelligence production is what's been called "the elevator briefing." What this means is that an analyst should be prepared and able to deliver a briefing in the time it takes to accompany a key customer from his or her office to the basement of the building. It does not necessarily mean such a briefing would be conducted in an elevator, but it does mean the briefing would be very short and concise, summarizing what is new, what information seems to mean, and how that information affects trends in strategic concerns. The elevator briefing is probably the most common way that intelligence is delivered to senior policymakers in Washington, and is fairly common in corporate executive suites as well. The advantages are fairly obvious for the busy executive for policymaker, and to some the disadvantages are fairly obvious for the analyst.
What are the major pitfalls? Can you think of, or find, an example of a problem? How would you alleviate the potential for mischief or problems associated with an elevator brief?
